Open crucibles

Where a sample contains volatile substances, they will evaporate while heated over their boiling point. If a differential scanning calorimetry measurement of this sample is performed with an open crucible, that will lead to erroneous results because the contents of the crucible will evaporate and - since this is an endothermic change - it would mask the heat release due to exothermic reactions.
