A type of protection where enclosures for electrical apparatus will withstand an internal explosion of the flammable gas or vapour which may enter it, without suffering damage and without communicating the internal flammation to the external flammable gas or vapour for which it is designed, through any joints or structural openings in the enclosure. Cross references: PD 60079-14:2000 type of protection in which the parts which can ignite an explosive atmosphere are placed in an enclosure which can withstand the pressure developed during an internal explosion of an explosive mixture and which prevents the transmission of the explosion to the explosive atmosphere surrounding the enclosure.
