A reaction which proceeds at the interface between two phases. Design and safety criteria for chemical reactions depend strongly on whether the system is homogeneous or heterogeneous. Heterogeneous processes depend on a larger number of parameters, especially those related with mass transfer. It is essential for heterogeneous processes to ensure a good mixing of the reactants during a chemical reaction. Particle size of reacting solids may also play an important role in the behaviour of the chemical processes.
