Screening methods & classification

Screening tests are designed to provide initial semi-quantitative data on the thermal stability of a material or reaction mixture. The tests should be:

  • Rapid to perform
  • Involve relatively small quantities of materials
  • Provide data which is easy to interpret
  • Be small-scale.

Data that can be obtained from such tests is:

  • Approximate onset temperature
  • Gas evolution potential
  • Exothermic magnitude data
  • Explosive type behaviour.
